Quality of Life Committee

MARI has established a Quality of Life Committee to help deal with non-zoning quality of life issues in our neigbhorhood such as streets, noise, litter, traffic, parking, relations with area Universities, etc. The actions of this committee strongly depend on ideas and effort from our members so please contact us to get propose and lead an effort to impact our quality of life. Some on-going matters involving the Universities include:

  • MARI developed a Quality of Life Committee in 2006 to address action items and priorities for taking action to improve quality of life in our neighborhood. This committee has prioritized actions to address concerns about litter, noise, and parking (crime addressed separately by Crime Committee).

  • The University Liason Commitee addresses common issues of neighbors and students and to address concerns such as fraternity housing and other student driven concerns in our area.

Dear Maple Area Neighbor,

In the stillness of a summer evening, while sweet flower scents drift through the streets, reflect for a moment on why you live in the Maple Area. Is it the rich history, the beautiful architecture, or the people? Did circumstances throw you here? What is it you love about living here, and what do you want to preserve? What elements do you feel affect your quality of life and do you want to change?
This is an aid for all the residents of the Maple Area - owners, renters - anyone and everyone who lives in the Maple Area and is willing to respect the rights of others and cares about this neighborhood and its future and wants to improve it.
Students living in this neighborhood, however briefly, are welcome and should be respected and treated as adults, and are subject to the same laws, ordinances, and penalties as all other residents.

Primarily, it is important for all of us to behave respectfully. We are all in this together – this is our neighborhood, and we all need to work together to keep it vibrant, clean, safe, and reasonably peaceful.

There are conditions in our neighborhood that we can and should change.

TRASH: We don’t need to-go cups, beer bottles, broken glass, food wrappers, dog poop, vomit, or snoozing drunks, and we don’t need over-flowing trash cans or unaddressed garbage anywhere.
NOISE: We don’t need excessive noise, particularly after 10PM. It is disrespectful, stressful and infuriating whether it is at 2:00AM or 2:00PM.
PARKING/SPEEDING: We don’t need irresponsible or illegal parking, or excessive speeds on our narrow streets.

Settling these issues in a civil, neighborly way is optimal. However, if this does not occur, it is important to know your rights. According to our Councilmember Shelley Midura, reporting problems is critical. The resolution may not be immediate, but leave a message and keep trying. If you still do not get a response, inform our City Councilmember by calling 658-1010 or emailing aechandler@cityofno.com. If you have a different issue than any of these, identify the problem, research the solution and educate the rest of us.
Don’t stew over it. Report it.

To help you report to the proper authority, download this Call-List, some references for City Codes & Ordinances, and a copy of the NOPD Second District Hot Sheet (Hot Sheets are used by the NOPD to identify areas where illegal activities are occurring, have occurred or potential problems exist). The following information could be printed and kept close to your phone for easy reference when needed.

Find something new or important for the rest of us ~ let us know ~ we’re all trying to protect, rebuild and preserve the values of our properties and our Quality of Life.
